One does also have to factor in the fact that tablet apps sell for something like $1 - $5. To borrow an example from Bob, a real book is for home. It seems like method in between a real notepad and Sibelius.įor me everything has its place. But since I do all of my composition on my computer, I don't see an iPad composition app worth it for me. Everyone works differently, and if I had an iPad, I'd probably find a way to use it in my composition process - hell, I might use it as paper and buy a stylus same work method, no paper. How easy is it to just pick up a pencil, quickly slash out 5 horizontal lines, and write in some notes?īut then, that's just me. But using paper is quick and easy for doing quick and easy things, like jotting down an idea. I love my computer and all the convenience and ease technology offers everyone.

They are very easy to carry around.įor all the iPads out there, I still talk to folks who prefer the feel, even the smell, of a paper book. Let's have them interface in classroom situations. But it needs to make it better and cheaper. After pretty much rewriting my piece, it goes into Sibelius, where it becomes a massive work for orchestra, rock band, antiphonal choirs,bagpipes,and lute. Then I take a photo of it and change it into a PDF, which I email to myself and import into PhotoScore.
Then I use the piano app to help write my masterpiece.

So I use my tablet pc as a straightedge to draw some. Or how about this I don't think I own any staff paper. How about the contact lens read out (instead of a screen)I've been hearing about. If tablets are to have a place, they need to do more. As it is, I carry my phone and my tablet around.

And to be fair, my Android tablet, which also cost more than my laptop, doesn't come close.

My laptop cost less than $500 and runs Sibelius 7 full sounds 98% of the time. These are times when education budgets are shrinking. Do we short change students with tools that are not robust enough. In a classroom situation(where students need to be able to explore all possible avenues)what part of Sibelius are we willing to give up.
I think meaningful apps may be a while off because I think tablets, as yet, lack the fire-power these apps need. While I agree that tablet notation apps will be useful, I'm not sure how useful. We need a genuine notation editing product at a basic level at least.

ForScore and others satisfy the music PDF reading application market. We need quality music apps for it! As a daily Sibelius user for many years, I hope to see a more robust interactive Sib-based app in the App Store soon. The iPad is gaining favor in the education arena at a rapid pace. As a musician and educator (and one whose district recently gave some of us music teachers an iPad for a pilot project) I see the iPad as an increasingly useful tool in the classroom on many different levels. The iPad and its imitators are making huge strides in the area of music applications. The most unfavorable comments are from after that update. According to the App Store the Avid Scorch was last updated on Nov. Avid Scorch on the other hand is a huge bust based on some very unfavorable comments (3 stars which is mediocre in the App rating world). It receives a hugely favorable rating (4 1/2 stars) based on over 50 reviews in the App Store. MakeMusic released Finale SongBook on the iPad marketplace June 1.
